Marathon River Swim Series Welcomes Norway’s GlommaDyppen as New Event in Iconic European Challenge

The Marathon River Swim Series, a unique open water challenge bringing together some of Europe’s most iconic river swims, has announced a major update: GlommaDyppen, held in Norway’s majestic Glomma River, will now join the series, replacing the Thames Marathon (UK), which has unfortunately ceased operations.

The series—formed by Le Flow des Gabarriers (France), UltraEbre (Spain), and now GlommaDyppen (Norway)—invites swimmers from around the world to take part in three breathtaking marathon swims to earn the prestigious title of Marathon River King or Queen.

To qualify, swimmers must complete all three events within a five-year period. Anyone who completed one of the events in 2022 or 2023, 2024 or is registered for 2025 becomes eligible.

“While we’re sad to see the Thames Marathon close its chapter, we are incredibly excited to welcome GlommaDyppen to the Marathon River Swim Series,” said Grégory Lécrevisse, organiser of Le Flow des Gabarriers. “The Glomma River brings fresh beauty, new challenges, and reinforces our mission to connect swimmers through unforgettable river adventures across Europe.”

The Three Events

  • Le Flow des Gabarriers (France):  33km swim through the Charente River in the heart of the Cognac region.
  • UltraEbre (Spain): A 30km marathon through Catalonia’s iconic Ebro River, established in 2012.
  • GlommaDyppen (Norway): A stunning 11km swim in the Glomma River—the longest river in Norway—welcoming swimmers to pristine Nordic landscapes.

Despite varying distances, each event delivers a shared focus: professional safety, immersive natural beauty, and a welcoming community of international open water swimmers.

Key Highlights

  • Diverse Locations: From the vineyards of France to the wilds of Norway, experience Europe’s most picturesque river courses
  • Expert Organisation: All events are run by seasoned teams who ensure world-class safety, logistics, and support
  • Passionate Community: Join a growing movement of swimmers who share a love for challenge, exploration, and connection

The 2025 Series begins with Le Flow des Gabarriers on June 14th, followed by UltraEbre on 5th July, and GlommaDyppen on 2nd August.

Several swimmers have already completed two out of the three swims and are in line to become the first ever Marathon River King or Queen. All finishers receive a woven Marathon River Swim Series badge for each event completed; those who collect all three badges will earn a limited-edition commemorative gift from the series organisers.

Registrations for all three events are now open. Join us and take part in a one-of-a-kind European adventure on the water!
